Even if you have a reliable supplier… Trust but verify! EU standard 16128 provides reference methods for testing nickel release of spectacle frames and sunglasses. Be aware that nickel release from eyewear products is subject to regular inspection by national authorities. Since 2020, several public notifications of frames from well-known brands have been published via the EU Commission’s Safety Gate due to excessive nickel release. The manufacturers had to issue recalls. Such measures are associated with a significant reputational damage.
